About Toto
Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes Toto a household name across the globe.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads of their previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begin an extensive tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
