Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally restructuring the band.
